Item 3D seismic constraints on the strato-structural evolution of the deep-water Orange Basin, South Africa(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023) Maduna, Nombuso Gladys; Jinna, Zubair; Manzi, MusaThis research utilizes seismic attributes and advanced machine learning methodologies to analyse high-resolution 3D reflection seismic data from the deep-water Orange Basin, located offshore western South Africa. The primary goal is to gain valuable insights into the basin's tectonic setting, depositional environment, and hydrocarbon potential. Significant features are delineated within the basin including (1) a gravitational collapse system in the Mesozoic Late Cretaceous, (2) mass flow features in the Cenozoic, (3) natural gas and fluid escape structures, (4) a large slope-perpendicular submarine canyon cutting Oligocene strata, and (5) multiple slope-parallel, sinusoidal channel features in the Miocene. The Late Cretaceous succession exhibits a gravitational collapse system with a translational and compressional domain detaching on seaward-dipping Turonian shales. Gravitational collapse during margin uplift formed fold-and-thrust belts along the slope characterizing the compressional domain. As they are commonly linked to hydrocarbons, the compressional domain of these systems has been extensively studied, while the translational domain has been poorly constrained due to its structural complexity. In this research, the translational domain is shown to contain a mixture of extensional tectonics (normal faults) up-dip and compressional tectonics (thrusts) down-dip, with extensive oblique-slip faults cutting thrusts perpendicularly during the translation of sediment. Variance and chaos, conventional seismic attributes, were used to manually pick and interpret the >500 regional-scale faults arising from the gravitational collapse system. Fault-net, a convolutional neural network (CNN), was compared with these edge-enhancing seismic attributes for extracting faults from the seismic volume. The CNN offers several notable advantages over conventional seismic attributes, such as automation, accelerated analysis, and improved time-efficiency on large datasets. Analysing the distribution, type, and geometry of faults within the basin gave valuable insights into the potential hydrocarbon system at work. Numerous natural gas and fluid escape features are identified in the seismic volume including an elongated mud volcano, pockmarked surfaces, and polygonal faults. The stability of the evolving margin is influenced by the underlying structure of a Late Cretaceous gravitational collapse system, also referred to as a deep-water fold and thrust belt (DWFTB) system. The fault framework within provides primary migration pathways for hydrocarbons. Major seafloor slumping occurs directly above a syncline of the Late Cretaceous DWFTB system. This slumping surrounds a structurally controlled, 4.2 km long elongated mud volcano situated between the translational and compressional domains of the underlying DWFTB system. The late Campanian has the largest accumulation of hydrocarbons evidenced by (1) an anticline with a positive high amplitude anomaly situated at the intersection of the two domains, and (2) >950 pockmarks preserved on the palaeo-surface compared to the 85 pockmarks observed on the seafloor. In addition to tectonics, the onset of stratified oceanographic circulation patterns and climate played a large role in changing depositional trends since the mid-Cenozoic. The Oligocene is characterized by a ~2.3 km wide, >13 km long, slope-perpendicular canyon formed at ~30 Ma during a major sea-level fall by a turbidity current. The Miocene is characterized by a ~14 km wide zone of slope-parallel, sinusoidal channels between water depths of 1 200–1 500 m. The formation and preservation of these features during the Miocene are attributed to the erosive interaction between two distinct water currents: (1) the Antarctic Intermediate Water flowing northwards, and (2) the deep North Atlantic Deep Water bottom currents flowing southwards; and the effects of the Benguela Upwelling System and a dry climate prevailing in southwest Africa all intensifying around 11 Ma. While pre-Miocene hydrocarbons originate from Turonian and Aptian source rocks, the origin of hydrocarbons on the seafloor is likely biogenic, arising from organic-rich sediment in the MioceneItem A comparative analysis of mining environmental management programme reports following a change to the one environmental system(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2022) Mathe, Lebogang; Watson, I.The mining fraternity has recently seen a shift in terms of environmental requirements under the ambit of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) to the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 (NEMA). The objective was to ensure a streamlined environmental compliance and to put emphasis on integrated environmental management. The One Environmental System (OES) was introduced which denotes that all environmental related projects or activities, including mining, are regulated through an ambit of one system. NEMA is recognised as an overarching law which provides for co-operative environmental governance; therefore, all environmental related activities are regulated under its ambit and EIA regulations. In this research report, the Environmental Management Programme (EMP) reports and Environmental Authorisations that were issued under the MPRDA and the 2014 NEMA regulations respectively, were analysed using the respective regulations to compare the environmental management measures outlined in the reports to achieve better environmental results. The aim of the research was to assess whether the Environmental Authorisations granted in terms of NEMA reflect better environmental results as compared to those issued under the MPRDA. Better environmental results mean improved management plans with clearer assessment of impacts, more detailed mitigation measures with specific, achievable, relevant and time bound actions that do not pose harmful effects on the environment and communities. A mixed method of analysis was implemented which included a review and comparison of legislation, evaluation and scoring of 20 EMPs (10 submitted under MPRDA and 10 submitted under NEMA) and interviews with key informants, namely competent authorities and the Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs) were conducted to support the findings of the reports. In conclusion, the reports analysed presented a significant improvement and better environmental results under NEMA. The interviews conducted with authorities and the EAPs have also substantiated the observations made in terms of Environmental Management Programme reports and Environmental Authorisations submitted. The findings indicated that there were similarities in the MPRDA and NEMA regulations as 4 | P a g e regards some environmental requirements. However, the MPRDA lacked to outline a detailed description of environmental requirements needed to manage environmental impacts. Thus, applicants provided limited information in terms of the management of impacts. NEMA has provided additional requirements, including baseline environmental information, specialist reports and public participation amongst others; these contributed to improved environmental results. The study revealed that the reports submitted under NEMA provided better environmental management measures as compared to the reports submitted under MPRDA.Item A GIS framework for the integrated conceptualisation, analysis and visualisation of Gauteng's complex historic and contemporary post-mining urban landscape(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023) Khanyile, Samkelisiwe; Esterhuysen, Amanda; Kelso, ClareThis research study applies assemblage theory as a philosophical lens. It proposes a framework for integrating contemporary and historical landscape characteristics of post-mining and urban landscapes for an integrated conceptualisation, mapping, and analysis of Gauteng, South Africa. The study utilises a mixed methods approach, incorporating spatial and non-spatial (literature and survey) data of varying formats to identify landscape characteristics. Additionally, it applies three multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) and GIS mapping techniques, employing a simplified rationale to keep its complexity low. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data, while the qualitative data was analysed using a thematic analysis. The literature and survey analysis findings were used to inform the development of a framework demonstrating the integration of Gauteng's post-mining and urban landscape characteristics using a fuzzy overlay, weighted overlay and random forest classification, along with an accuracy assessment of the mapped results. Based on the proposed framework, the mapped results' performance was evaluated through four methods: confusion error matrix, cross-evaluation, areal coverage comparison, and an image differencing assessment. The literature and survey analysis findings, used to inform the framework, reveal that the two landscapes consist of an assemblage of characteristics and highlight differences in the characterisation of post- mining and urban landscapes. Distinctions were also apparent between literature-derived characteristics and those identified from local experts. The local expert-derived characteristics demonstrate context- specific characteristics of Gauteng's post-mining and urban landscape. At the same time, those based on the literature emphasise a more distinct and separate portrayal of post-mining and urban landscape characteristics (pages 115-116). The characteristics identified from local experts were less conservative (pages 117-118). They included urban-related characteristics in the description of post-mining landscapes and mining-related characteristics in the description of urban landscapes, presenting some similarities in the characterisation of these two landscapes in Gauteng. Moreover, the findings from local experts also revealed that literature and other written or mapped work informed most definitions of post-mining and urban landscapes. The framework for integrating landscape characteristics (pages 121-123) was spatially represented through the three mapping methods, visually demonstrating several findings providing insight into the Gauteng landscape's uniqueness. First, it demonstrates that the differences in the characterisation of these landscapes also impact how they are spatially represented. The maps of post-mining and urban landscape characteristics based on the literature presented a similar pattern to the traditional mapping of mining and urban landscapes in Gauteng. These mapping techniques show the highest values across the mining belt and at the province's core. These findings highlight the influence of literature on the representation of these two landscapes, which is consistent with local experts' reports. In all three mapping methods, the maps generated from local expert characterisations of post-mining and urban landscapes presented a larger spatial footprint than those based on literature-derived characteristics. This distinction was attributed to incorporating additional post-mining and urban landscape characteristics in the maps based on expert input and applying the three mapping techniques - using representation methods not commonly used in mapping these landscapes. Second, the integrated maps of post-mining and urban landscape characteristics suggested a variance in the presence of post-mining and urban landscape characteristics across the province in the maps generated using fuzzy and weighted overlay techniques. This indicates that some parts of the province have a higher or lower presence of post-mining or urban characteristics (pages 125-132). These findings were visible in the maps generated from literature and local experts, indicating the diversity of both landscapes and the co-existence of post-mining and urban landscape characteristics in the local expert maps. This implies an intricate relationship between these landscapes, challenging the idea of them being strictly separate, as indicated in maps presenting characteristics identified from the literature. Furthermore, a closer inspection of the areas showing the intersection between post-mining and urban landscape characteristics also points towards the porosity of boundaries of these two landscapes and alevel of spatial overlap, organisation and arrangement, which are prevalent at varying levels (pages 164- 168). Third, the maps generated using literature-derived characteristics achieved higher accuracy scores, attributed to using reference data traditionally used to map the two landscapes under investigation. This reference data only comprised classes that characterised the physical mining and urban classes, consistent with those identified in the literature. Consequently, it lacked additional factors characterising the post-mining and urban landscape identified from local experts. The fuzzy overlay maps informed by literature demonstrated an accuracy exceeding 70% for post-mining and urban landscape characteristics. In comparison, those reported by local experts scored 64. The weighted overlay and random forest classification resulted in accuracy rates exceeding 50% for post-mining landscape characteristics maps, regardless of whether literature or expert-derived characteristics were used. Additionally, urban landscape characteristics maps achieved an accuracy of over 76%, regardless of the characteristics used to inform the mapping. These findings were attributed to the different mapping techniques employed, with fuzzy and weighted overlay using a gradual range scale, while random forest classification employed a binary scale. This highlights how different mapping methods affect the representation of space. Additionally, it demonstrates the versatility of these mapping techniques in mapping complex spaces such as post-mining and urban landscapes. In this study, the fuzzy overlay accuracies exceeded 60% for all maps and emerged as the most suitable choice for integrating landscape characteristics due to its ability to represent blurred and porous boundaries between Gauteng's post- mining and urban landscapes. In conclusion, the study challenges the notion of post-mining and urban landscapes as distinct landscapes, emphasising the importance of considering the varying levels of spatial intersection between these two landscapes. With the proposed framework and the alternative representation of these landscapes, including contextual information, this research provides insights into new conceptualisations of urban, post-mining landscapes and mineralised urbanisations as assemblages of different landscapes and characteristics with porous boundaries. This enables a better understanding of Gauteng's post-mining and urban landscapes, which could benefit the representation, communication and management of these landscapes. Recognising the potential applications and limitations of frameworks such as the one developed for this study, the high-level recommendation arising from this study suggests a need for ongoing research into the contextual representation of landscapes and their characteristics. This can be achieved by incorporating input from communities, conducting research on quantifying intangible landscape characteristics and developing tools that facilitate the automation and alignment of such data with development plans.Item An investigation into high gear and low gear propulsion in human gait and its relation to metatarsal diaphyseal geometric cross-sectional properties(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023-06) Reyneker, Mark Brenden; Carlson, Kristian J.; Zipfel, BernhardThis study investigates the relationship between metatarsal bone form, as quantified by cross-sectional geometric properties, and its relationship to high (medial forefoot loading) versus low gear (lateral forefoot loading) push-off during the propulsion phase of the gait cycle. The objective being to assess whether forefoot loading may be variable or whether high gear loading occurs in higher frequencies, as depicted in theoretical foot function models. The study sample (n=53), made up of three broad groups, include Later Stone Age southern Africans, post-industrial individuals from South Africa, and the Jomon of Japan. Metatarsals 1-5 cross-sectional geometric properties (CSA, Ix, Iy, Imin, Imax, Zx, Zy, Zp, Zmin, Zmax) taken from CT scans at 25%, 35%, 50% and 65% metatarsal diaphyseal biomechanical lengths are grouped into high gear (metatarsal 1-2) and low gear (metatarsal 2-5) for comparison. The combined population analysis reveals that the high gear metatarsal diaphysis exhibit significantly higher strength and rigidity driven mainly by the post-industrial individuals from South Africa and the Later Stone Age southern Africans. In contrast, the Jomon of Japan, exhibit no significant differences between high and low gear metatarsals except for CSA, Imax, and Zmax. Furthermore, metatarsal 1 and 5 differ far less in cross-sectional geometric properties in the Jomon of Japan compared to the other populations except for medial-lateral strength (Zy) and torsional and average bending strength (Zp) where metatarsal 5 is significantly higher. The study findings indicate that forefoot loading demonstrates variability during the propulsion phase of gait, while also suggesting a higher frequency of occurrence for high gear push-off. This challenges current theoretical models of foot function that emphasise high gear push-off as typical and normal for striding bipedalism.Item Assessment of disposal methods of construction and demolition waste: A case study of south-eastern industrial and residential areas in Johannesburg, South Africa(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Jager, Vasti de; Kubanza, Nzalalemba SergeIn a world where all strive for further development, construction and demolition play alarge role in that process. The waste generated in construction and demolition projects is of great magnitude and needs to be dealt with and disposed of appropriately, however, is this truly the case? Gauteng is a province where landfills are easily accessible and a cheap disposal option. This study set out to assess disposal methods of construction and demolition waste in south-east Johannesburg, South Africa. Landfills and recycling were the prevalent disposal methods, and these were compared to other countries’ disposal methods. Policy and legislation regarding solid waste management were analysed and a gap between written documents and implementation was identified. The question of sustainability also played a role in the synthesis of the studyItem Biodiversity stewardship in south africa - an assessment of the klipkraal biodiversity stewardship programme and its potential for conservation(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Butler, KirstenThe importance of conservation in agriculture has become more apparent over the last couple of years, however it involves complex social-ecological relationships and as agriculture is a critical industry for human survival, biodiversity conservation in the industry is a major challenge worldwide. In South Africa, biodiversity stewardship programmes, which involve agreements between landowners and conservation authorities to secure land in biodiversity priority areas, are becoming a prominent method of conservation in agriculture. Yet there is a lack of research on the conservation benefits and whether they show improvements in the area’s biodiversity. This study focussed on the Klipkraal biodiversity stewardship programme which consists of two privately owned functional cattle farms in a peri-urban area of the southern grasslands of Gauteng making up 2 656 hectares of land of which 1 600 hectares are natural vegetation, and the remaining area is cultivated land used for farming maize and soya. The study sought to answer the question: what is the ecological state of the area and does this programme have potential for conservation in the long-term? The aim of this study was to assess the potential conservation benefits and sustainability of the Klipkraal biodiversity stewardship programme. The study involved both qualitative and quantitative data collection, including landcover mapping, field surveying to assess the vegetation state and mammal diversity and distribution of the site, and interviews with key stakeholders. The landcover mapping allowed for a visual representation of the various landcover types and percentage coverage of each of the six landcover types found in the study area. Vegetation assessments at five different sites resulted in an understanding of the vegetation structure, composition and cover across the two farms and from this it was established that the vegetation structure and species diversity differ, but the species composition is similar throughout the study site. An anthropogenic disturbance score was allocated to each site and the highest rated anthropogenic scores correlated with the sites consisting of the highest exotic species. The mammal assessments showed that the varying vegetation structure allows for specialist species to occupy a range of habitats within the site and also indicated that there are barriers to the movement of large mammals within the site. The results of the vegetation and mammal assessment which suggest a diverse range of vegetation units, habitats, and mammal diversity, emphasise that the area is important for conservation. The interviews revealed the multiple challenges involved in the Klipkraal Biodiversity Stewardship Programme and requirements in order for the programme to be successful in the long term. These include a need for willingness of landowners to put their time and resources into conservation efforts on their properties, a need for constant monitoring of management strategies, the importance of expanding the stewardship areas to ensure conservation of the entire area and not just isolated fragments of the area. However, key challenges in expanding the programme were also revealed, such as scepticism by landowners in entering land agreements with the government and in Gauteng, many areas of conservation interest are made of multiple small properties that are owned by different landowners which means a lot of effort is required in getting each landowner to sign up. Insight was also given into the roles of the various stakeholders and the relationship between the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) and the landowners, and it was indicated that GDARD’s role is to provide guidance, education and resources when available to the landowners in order to manage their protected area. This study can be used as a baseline study for GDARD to measure the progress in conservation in terms of the landcover and ecological aspects at the site and to monitor any changes in landowner-GDARD dynamics.Item Characterisation of Drought Using Hydrological and Meteorological Indices: A Case Study of Bethlehem, South Africa(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023) Tshabalala, Khanyisile; Evans, Mary; Masindi, KhulisoThe study aims to assess the severity and evolution of drought/s in Bethlehem using the hydrological: Streamflow Drought Index (SDI), Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI), Effective Reconnaissance Drought Index (eRDI) and meteorological: Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI), Agricultural Standardised Precipitation Index (aSPI), and Precipitation Deciles (PD) indices. These indices were computed using the Drought Indices Calculator (DrinC). The RDI, eRDI, aSPI, and SPI identified three drought events between 1980 and 2017. The PD on the other hand, identified particular years between 1980 and 2017 that received below-normal to much below- normal precipitation. Further, the years identified to have received below normal to much below normal precipitation fell between the drought periods identified by the other indices, such as the 1980 – 1990 drought identified by the SPI, RDI, aSPI, and eRDI; the PD identified 1982, 198, 1985, and 1986 as specific years the received significantly low precipitation within the decade long drought. Of critical note is the absence of the SDI results, stream levels data was not available at the time the results presented in this report were computed. The unavailability of SDI values did not compromise or negatively affect the results presented in this study as the computed indices had a strong correlation, implying the reliability of the results presented in this reportItem Characterization, quantification, and recovery of rare earth elements(rees) in South African coal fly ash samples(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Michael Rampfumedzi, Tshilidzi; Chimuka, LukeRare earth elements (REEs) are naturally distributed throughout the Earth's crust, typically in low concentrations. They are not typically found in isolation but are rather present in various minerals, often in amounts too minute for cost-effective extraction. Fly ash is among the sources that are deemed economically viable for extracting REEs. The objective of this study was to create environmentally sustainable approaches for measuring and reclaiming rare earth elements (REEs) in coal fly ash (CAF) samples. The study involved analyzing fly ash samples collected from various coal power stations using a range of standard and advanced techniques, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The XRF only shows the presence of REEs from all three fly ash samples with a range of 40 to 100 ppm and mineral oxide ranging from 0.1 to 50 %. The XRD results show that fly ash sample is a siliceous-rich sample with abundant minerals such as quartz (SiO2), magnetite (Fe3O4), and mullite (Al4.52Si1.48O9.74). The SEM analysis of the sample confirmed the presence of rare earth minerals, including monazite which is a light atomic mass (LREE), xenotime, a heavy atomic mass (HREE), and perrierite-bearing minerals. The results obtained from the instrumental analysis show that the ICP-MS instrument is the more effective analytical technique for REE analysis in this context as compared to ICP-OES. Using certified reference materials, the results obtained by two acids digestion technique, acids digestion and sodium peroxide fusion in, CGL 111, CGL 124, and AMISO276, were compared to validate whether the methods are reliable. The acid digestion approach demonstrated greater effectiveness in comparison to the sodium peroxide fusion method. The recovery percentage (%) from ICP‒MS showed an excellent percentage yield (80 – 120%) compared to the ICP‒OES instrument (50 –120%). The ICP‒MS data indicate that all fly ash samples have a high concentration of LREEs and a lower concentration of HREEs. Excellent recovery was obtained by ICP‒MS in a developed microwave acid digestion method. The concentration of REEs obtained from ICP - MS and OES in fly ash samples ranged from 50 ppm to 200 ppm for light rare earth elements and 0.5 ppm to 20 ppm for heavy rare earth elements. The total REE ( TREE) concentrations in all fly ash samples range from 400 ppm to 600 ppmItem Cognition in urban-dwelling yellow mongoose, Cynictis penicillata(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Muller, Mijke; Pillay, NevilleCognition involves perceiving and processing environmental cues and devising appropriate behavioural responses to act on the acquired information. Studying animal cognition in an urban setting provides insight into the occurrence of behavioural changes in urban-adapted animals. This thesis aimed to investigate the cognitive abilities of a population of yellow mongoose, Cynictis penicillata, inhabiting locations with differing extents of urbanisation in South Africa. First, I investigated whether mongooses could learn to solve a puzzle box problem of increasing complexity. The mongooses were able to solve the problem at each stage of complexity, but took longer in a residential ecological estate than those frequently visiting a residential garden. These results indicated that mongooses were capable of innovation, but their problem-solving abilities were influenced by the level of disturbance in their environment. Secondly, I investigated whether mongooses exhibited cognitive flexibility. The mongooses were able to inhibit a non-rewarding behaviour, even when it was previously rewarded, in favour of a newly rewarded behaviour during the puzzle box task. Additionally, they could solve the puzzle box problem during distraction, but took longer with the most distraction, likely splitting their attention between solving the problem and remaining vigilant. Combined, the mongooses were capable of reversal learning and divided/alternating attention, providing evidence of cognitive flexibility in this mongoose population. Thirdly, I investigated the effects of a direct human approach on the problemsolving ability of mongooses. In areas of heightened human disturbances, the mongooses had reduced tolerance to humans, but were equally efficient at solving the puzzle box problem following human disturbance than those in areas of reduced human disturbance. Those more tolerant of humans improved their problem-solving efficiency, likely adapting to the disturbance. Finally, I investigated whether mongooses experienced a paradox of choice (i.e. whether too much choice can be cognitively challenging). The mongooses in my study appeared to experience cognitive difficulties when presented with extensive choice, providing support for a paradox of choice. These results provide evidence that urban-living yellow mongooses’ successful adaptation to an urban habitat may be attributed to their cognitive abilities, allowing them to exploit novel resources and flexibly adapt to the rapid environmental changes associated with urbanisation. However, the disturbance associated with urbanisation may negatively affect problem-solving efficiency, which may impact successful food acquisition, and the increased availability of resources may be cognitively challenging for urban-living yellow mongooses.Item Compost-assisted phytoremediation of mine tailings and footprint areas using chrysopogon zizanioides (l) roberty enhanced with moringa leaf extract biostimulant in the Witwatersrand goldfields of South Africa: a sustainability initiative(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Mlalazi, Nkanyiso; Chimuka, Luke; Simatele, Mulala DannyIn the Witwatersrand goldfields of South Africa, mine tailings and footprint areas are significant environmental problems because they are major sources of toxic metals. These metals can leach into soils, and both surface and ground water, causing serious risks to human, animal, and plant life. In this study, the compost-assisted phytoremediation of tailing storage facilities (TSFs) and footprint soil using Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver grass) enhanced with moringa leaf extract (MLE) was investigated. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to identify the most favorable parameters, and was followed by a field study to test the optimized parameters under real-environment settings. For the greenhouse experiment, a 3×2×2 fully crossed factorial design was used to determine the optimum variables. Vetiver growth was assessed under three compost concentrations (0%, 30% and 60%), two types of MLE (laboratory extracted MLE and commercial MLE) and two application regimens (once a week and twice a week) were used. The biomass and metal concentrations in the vetiver grass roots and leaves were measured after sixteen weeks followed by a two-way ANOVA analysis and the post-hoc tests. All the vetiver that was planted in 0% compost died within four weeks regardless of the MLE treatment. Vetiver grass planted on the 60% compost amendments and sprayed with laboratory extracted MLE had the highest biomass production, followed by plants grown in 30% compost amendments and sprayed with commercial biostimulant. However, the heavy metal removal or uptake data by the plant was inconclusive, as most of the toxic metals were not removed by vetiver grass which was attributed to the effect of compost. Based on biomass data, the 30% compost amendment and commercial bio-stimulant was the ideal treatments for the phytoremediation of gold mine tailings using vetiver grass. Although metal accumulation by plants is one of the attributes considered in phytoremediation, it is not the most significant factor in the phytostabilisation process. Plant growth and biomass production are the most significant, therefore it is concluded that vetiver, MLE and compost can be used in the phytostabilisation of gold mine tailings, however reduction in compost may be considered in future to improve the accumulation of metals in the roots for improved results. Following the conclusion of the greenhouse study, a field study was conducted during the rainy season of 2021. Two field experiments were carried out concurrently at two sites: the footprint area (that was used as a rock dump) and the tailings storage facility (TSF 4). A split-plot design was used in this study. The experiment at each site assumed a 3×1×2 factorial design, with three levels of compost treatment (0%, 15% and 30%), 1 level of vetiver cultivar (Chrysopogon zizanioides), and 2 levels of MLE treatment (commercial MLE and tap water, both sprayed once a week). Three blocks measuring 1 m × 2 m, each with 20 holes filled with equal amounts of soil amended with the different compost levels were prepared in triplicates. A single vetiver grass slip was planted in each hole. The blocks were then divided into 2 sections, each with 10 holes, and commercial MLE was sprayed on one section, while only water was sprayed on the other section once a week. After sixteen weeks, three plants were harvested from each section and the number of leaves, leaf length, number of tillers, biomass for roots and leaves and element concentrations were measured. Data analysis was done using two-way ANOVAItem Constraints on the genesis of orbicular granites and sulphide mineralization in the Koperberg Suite, South Africa and the Diana’s Pool area, Zimbabwe(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Dumisa, Senamile SiyayaThis work tackles a long-standing problem in petrology, the formation of orbicular granitoids. These bodies occur as entire facies or as areas enriched in orbicules within distinct facies of plutons. Some European examples are highly prized for their decorative qualities. However, their origin is a matter of much debate going back to times when the origins of granitoids themselves were not obvious and are confused by topics such as ‘granitization’ and over-exaggeration of metasomatic effects. Here, poorly studied outcrops of orbicular rocks from the Matopos granite batholith in the Diana’s Pool area, Zimbabwe and the Koperberg Suite, South Africa are tackeld. Enzman (1953) and Garvie (1969; 1971) studied the Koperberg Suite and the Diana’s Pool orbicules, respectively and employed field observations and petrography to examine and characterize the genesis of these rocks. However, there is little evidence presented to confirm their theories on how these rocks formed as previous work lacks detailed geochemical, mineral chemistry and isotope data to support Enzman and Gravie’s conclusions on the genesis of these rocks. Furthermore, there is no connection between the metallogenesis of the sulphide mineralization and the origin of orbicular rocks, which is a unique characteristic of particular orbicule sites in the Koperberg Suite. This study focuses on four different orbicular bodies (Orbicule Koppie, Henderson South, Henderson North and Hoogkraal Lease) from the Koperberg Suite, hosted in lithologies ranging from diorite to pyroxenite compositions. The orbicules from different orbicular share similar characteristics. Coarse- grained felsic cores, fine-grained and alternating ferromagnesian and feldspathic shells, and coarse- grained to pegmatitic matrices characterize them. The orbicules are generally spherical to ellipsoidal in shape, however, some appear to be abraded and deformed (e.g., Orbicule Koppie). The compositions and grain sizes of cores and the matrix are comparable in all localities. Both the matrix and the cores are medium- to coarse-grained and dominated by plagioclase (the matrix probably in slightly lesser proportions), microcline (in variable proportions, and seemingly absent in some cores), quartz, biotite, magnetite and orthopyroxene (in the case of Hoogkraal Lese, Henderson North and Henderson South). Contrary to the cores and matrix, shells are fine-grained and exhibit polygonal textures. In addition to this, the shells are dominated by biotite and orthopyroxene. Plagioclase in the Henderson North and Henderson South orbicules is more calcic than plagioclase in Hoogkraal Lease and Orbicule Koppie orbicules. Biotite in the Henderson North and the Orbicule Koppie orbicules is more magnesian than those at Henderson South and Hoogkraal Lease orbicules. Plagioclase in the Henderson North orbicules are characterized by elevated and radiogenic initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios than the other orbicule localities. There is also a variation in 87Sr/86Sr ratios within the individual orbicular structures (cores, shells and matrices) in individual localities. The orbicules at Henderson South, Orbicule Koppie and the Jubilee Pit host a bornite-dominated sulphide assemblage where disseminated chalcopyrite and bornite grains are characterized by granular textures and chalcopyrite is replaced by magnetite and bornite. Bismuth, Ni and Se in these sulphides appear to partition into bornite while Ag, In, Cd, Sn, Mn, Ge and Co partition into chalcopyrite. Diana’s Pool orbicular samples exhibit closely packed orbicules in a granitic matrix characterized by different types of orbicules containing coarse-grained felsic cores, fine-grained and alternating ferromagnesian and feldspathic shells, and a coarse-grained to pegmatitic matrix. The orbicules are generally spherical to ellipsoidal in shape, however, some appear to be abraded and deformed. The compositions and grain sizes of cores and the matrix are comparable. Both the matrix and the cores are medium- to coarse-grained and dominated by plagioclase (the matrix probably in slightly lesser proportions), microcline (in variable proportions, and seemingly absent in some cores), quartz, biotite and accessory hornblende and magnetite. Contrary to the cores and matrix, shells are fine-grained and exhibit polygonal textures. In addition to this, the shells are dominated by biotite and magnetite; however, they do not contain hornblende. Plagioclase in cores, shells and matrices shows an almost complete overlap of An contents. Biotite composition in the shells is significantly less magnesian than in core and matrix, whose compositions overlap. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios from plagioclase in shells are slightly more radiogenic than in the matrix and cores. Formation of both the Koperberg Suite and Diana’s Pool orbicules has been attributed to metasomatic processes. However, modelling of the Koperberg Suite orbicules using the Magma Chamber Simulator and a variety of textural and geochemical constraints rules out a metasomatic origin. The quartz + biotite-dominated diorite (Orbicule Koppie) and the pyroxene-diorites (Hoogkraal Lease, Henderson South, Henderson North), together with more felsic anorthosite and the more mafic pyroxenites, are all produced by progressive AFC + recharge processes, where the magma was most likely anatectic melts of the country rocks that were at granulite grade. In both Diana’s Pool and the Koperberg Suite, cores are autoliths, which are plagioclase-rich, cumulate, or rim fragments reworked by new magma inputs or injections. Heterogeneous nucleation leading to the formation of orbicular shells around the cores is attributed to adiabatic decompression of magma pulses ascending in dykes leading to superheating and resorption of early solids, and volatile exsolution, inducing undercooling, supersaturation, and shell crystallization. An alternative process that triggered superheating is magma mixing (e.g., Henderson South and Henderson North). The coarse-grained matrix crystallized later, after the orbicules formed, creating the groundmass, and locking the orbicules in place. The deformation of shells and cores (e.g., Orbicule Koppie and Diana’s Pool) suggests that the orbicules continued to evolve in the presence of a melt (matrix material) until they were emplaced at their present setting. The in situ sulphide assemblages in the Koperberg Suite have been reassessed in view of recent research on sulphide behavior. The bornite-chalcopyrite assemblage is atypical of the intermediate solid solution (iss) assemblage (chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite) observed in most Cu-Ni magmatic sulphide deposits. The high concentrations of trace elements that are incompatible with monosulphide solid solution and the depletion of Ni and Co in the sulphides are consistent with the derivation of sulphides from a Cu-rich sulphide melt that separated from a Ni-rich sulphide melt prior to magma emplacement and orbicule formation. The oxidation and Cu-enrichment of a sulphide melt that formed the mineralization in the orbicules and Koperberg Suite more generally began prior to the emplacement of the silicate Koperberg Suite magmas that formed the orbicules, suggesting no link between orbicule genesis and sulphide metallogenesis.Item Exploring Spatio-Temporal Climate Dynamics over Central Southern Africa: A Cross Border Analysis(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023-07) Welff, Megan; Fitchett, Jennifer; Esterhuysen, AmandaUnderstanding the diverse nature of climate dynamics in southern Africa is imperative in the face of climate change. Ground-based meteorological stations provide high-resolution climate data that can be used to investigate and analyse climate in detail. However, southern African countries monitor and manage meteorological stations independently which presents various challenges when attempting cross-border studies. While there are many meteorological-station-based climate studies conducted for South Africa or Botswana, there are few that combine meteorological datasets from both these countries to investigate climate dynamics across political boundaries. In this study, meteorological data from Botswana Meteorological Services and the South African Weather Service spanning 1912-2019 is pre-processed, cleaned and combined to produce a cross-border dataset. A total of 44 stations covers the Gauteng and North West provinces in South Africa and the southern, Kweneng, Kgatleng, South-east and Kgalagadi districts of Botswana. The combined cross-border dataset includes the average monthly summer, winter and annual rainfall (RS, RW and RA respectively) and the average monthly minimum and maximum summer, winter and annual temperatures (TSmin, TSmax, TWmin, TWmax, TAmin and TAmax respectively). From the linear regression analysis, an overall increasing trend for temperature is identified barring two stations (TSmin and TAmin for Mahalapye Met station, and TWmin for Vaalharts). Additionally, for rainfall there is a significant decreasing trend identified. Lastly, the spatial variability of the region is determined using an Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation in the GIS Software, ArcMap, to interpolate between stations. From this a west to east reduction in rainfall and a north-western to south-eastern decreasing temperature gradient is identified across the study region.Item Factors limiting karoo shrub populations in the Nama-Karoo(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023-09) Hebbelmann, Lisa; O’Connor, Tim; Witkowski, EdThe Nama-Karoo Biome occupies the central and western region of South Africa. Nama-Karoo shrublands are dominated by karoo dwarf shrubs and in the wetter eastern regions annual and perennial grasses are interspersed among shrubs. Rainfall and grazing are the main drivers of vegetation change in the Nama-Karoo. Stocking rate, season of grazing and animal type are important influences on vegetation community composition, and rainfall determines shrub growth and the abundance of grass. More recently, fire has been identified as a driver of vegetation change. Understanding vegetation change is important for land managers in the Nama-Karoo as changes in karoo shrub communities have implications for forage availability. This thesis is focused on understanding how grazing, fire, grass-shrub competition, and soil moisture and temperature affect the composition, structure, growth and phenology of karoo shrubs in the Eastern Upper Karoo. Livestock type and stocking rate vary greatly over the greater Nama-Karoo area. Plant composition data from the Afrikaner-Hereford grazing trial at Grootfontein show that grazing has a strong legacy effect on Karoo rangelands and grazing-induced compositional and structural changes are clear many years after grazing has ceased. Different sheep breeds affect karoo shrub communities in different ways. There was a severe negative effect of heavy stocking with dorper sheep on karoo shrub communities and their structure; the impacts of merino sheep were significant but less severe. Effects of animal type and stocking rate were not consistent across the sites but appear to be dependent on edaphic factors. Soil physical properties appear to play an important part in determining the long term effects of grazing on karoo shrub communities. Fire is a novel disturbance in the Karoo. Nine sites which had experienced fire for the first time in history were studied for the effect of fire on the composition and structure of their shrub communities. The immediate effect of fire on karoo shrub communities was severe and the legacy effect of fire was significant. The nature of recovery after a fire depended on the abundance of fire-intolerant obligate reseeder shrubs that are killed by fire compared to the abundance of fire-tolerant resprouting shrubs. Rainfall and grazing management were important determinants of shrub recovery after a fire. As rainfall increases, grass biomass is predicted to increase, and this may result in fire becoming a more frequent occurrence in the Nama-Karoo. During periods of high rainfall, the biomass of grass in the Nama-Karoo increased at the expense of shrub cover. The effect of grass-shrub competition on shrub growth and phenology is not adequately explained by existing hypotheses of niche separation and succession. A field experiment which examined the growth and phenology of karoo shrubs in the presence of grass (unclipped control) and the absence of grass (grass removed by clipping) did not provide evidence of a competitive effect from grass on shrub growth or phenology. It did, however, provide valuable insight into how shrub growth and phenology are influenced by soil moisture and temperature. Rainfall in the Nama-Karoo is sporadic and a karoo shrub’s ability to utilise soil moisture will determine its ability to grow and successfully recruit. Shrub growth, with or without grasses in the vicinity, was strongly correlated with rainfall, but this was modified by temperature. Similarly, soil moisture and temperature were important for stem growth and phenology. Flowering occurred in response to soil moisture all year round but seeding occurred mainly during summer. Patterns of growth and phenology can be used by land managers to optimise shrub production while allowing phenological processes to take place. The findings of this study provide further insight into how grazing, fire, competition, soil moisture and temperature influence shrub populations and their structure, and these are discussed in the context of an existing state-and-transition model for the Eastern Upper Karoo. The importance of animal type and stocking rate, and how they vary across Nama-Karoo landscapes, is highlighted. The legacy of both grazing and fire reveal that the transitions between the alternate states of Nama-Karoo shrublands are not easily reversed in a management timeframe. It may take decades for a community changed by grazing or fire, acting independently or in conjunction, to return to their former state even under benign management. These findings along with a description of how soil moisture and temperature influence shrub growth and phenology have been used to make ecologically sound recommendations for the management of Nama-Karoo rangelands. Future research is needed to improve our understanding of how edaphic factors limit and influence karoo shrub populations across a variety of karoo landscapes, how repeat fires might change karoo vegetation, and whether temperature and the presence of pollinators influences shrub seed set. An assessment of the economic implications of vegetation change in the Nama-karoo is warranted so that management recommendations can be made with both ecology and economy in mind.Item Functional feeding groups of mayfly nymphs (Ephemeroptera) in South African rivers of the North West and Limpopo Provinces(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024-02) Bossman, Esi H.; Harrison, James du G.; Woodford, Darragh J.Researchers, primarily in the Northern hemisphere, have extensively studied mouthpart morphology and dietary variability in Ephemeroptera (colloquially called mayflies). Ephemeroptera are key primary consumers in rivers around the world and are used as aquatic biomonitoring indicators due to interspecific variation in ecological tolerances that make them good indicator taxa. Cummins (1973, 1974) created a functional feeding groups (FFG) classification system, based on northern hemisphere macroinvertebrates, as a universal tool to functionally categorise organisms based on their primary feeding mode within their habitat. The FFG classification system is useful in identifying interrelations between structural and functional components of an ecosystem. The aim of this study was to contribute knowledge on FFGs for particular mayfly species, in the southern African savanna biome, through mouthpart morphology and gut content analysis. Four study sites were sampled from the Magaliesberg (M) and Waterberg (W) catchments. There were three species studied, namely Afroptilum parvum (Family Baetidae), Afronurus barnardi (Family Heptageniidae) and Elassoneuria sp. (Family Oligoneuriidae). These species’ mouthparts were dissected and their macro- and microstructures were prepared for viewing with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy. Micrographs and images showed variation in mouthpart morphology between all three species, with special attention to the labia and maxilla microstructures. The identification and description of microstructures that differentiate mayfly species (and the adaptations of these appendages to facilitate food uptake and ingestion) are important to address knowledge gaps regarding mayfly mouthpart morphology. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed distinct grouping of the three species, with mandibles and maxillary palps showing the most variation between species. After analysis, the following feeding groups were assigned: Afroptilum parvum is a collector-gatherer feeder, Afronurus barnardi is a brusher-scraper feeder and Elassoneuria sp. is a filter feeder. This study showed, in part, that the Cummins’ (1973, 1974) classification categories were too broad for classifying organisms from a South African savanna stream. However, it is a good foundational starting point for region specific FFG classification systems. Thus, it is recommended to use the classification system Cummins created as a starting point for classifying organisms into FFGs with an initial definition that can be expanded upon to create individual classification systems for different localities.Item Home range establishment of translocated African elephants (Loxodonta africana) in a savanna environment(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023-09) Ngorima, Patmore; Parrini, Francesca; Boyers, Melinda; Mariotti, ElenaData from nine female African elephants translocated to Hurungwe Safari Area that had been collared was used to estimate home range patterns. Monthly home ranges for each elephant were estimated using the 50% and 95% Kernel Density Estimates (KDEs) method for a period of 20 months following translocation. At the population level, a linear regression model was used to test for the effect of months from release on the home range patterns. The findings revealed that the 95% home range of the elephants increased over time, while the 50% home range decreased since their initial release. I went further to compare the individual differences using the generalised additive model. The results showed some individual differences in patterns of exploration, with some displaying more linear home range patterns than others. Over and above, a considerably positive and relevant relationship between time and variation in the extent of the home range was observed.Item Investigation of rhombohedral 𝑩𝒊𝟐𝑶𝟑 as an oxide conducting electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cell applications(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023-09) Kerspuy, Tanner Royele Rowan; Billing, Caren; Erasmus, Rudolph M.; Billing, Dave GordonThe synthesis of a bismuth system co-doped with neodymium (Nd3+) and yttrium (Y3+) was at the core of this project. The focus was placed on the synthesis of the rhombohedral phase of bismuth oxide, which has not been observed in pure bismuth oxide. Neodymium was selected as the main dopant (the one used in highest dopant concentration), due to its Shannon ionic radii. Upon doping with Nd3+ as a single dopant, it is observed that a mixture of the rhombohedral and monoclinic phases is obtained, thus noting that the single dopant system using Nd3+ does not stabilise the rhombohedral phase. When using a co-doped system of 15 mol % Nd3+ and 5 mol % Y3+ (15Nd5YSB), it is observed that we are able to obtain a stable phase pure rhombohedral phase, with a total dopant concentration of 20 mol%. The total dopant concentration % ranges selected ranged between 8.5-10 mol %, 20 mol % and 22.5 mol %. The Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data obtained for both the laboratory and synchrotron-based techniques indicate sample phase purity and phase stability for the samples under investigation. The refinements obtained for the samples indicated that not only one structure model was used to fit the experimental data. The structural models which fit the Rietveld refinements of the experimental data resulted in the observation of pure phase and mixed phase rhombohedral samples being observed. The Nd0.15Y0.05-Bi2O3 (15Nd5YSB)sample resulted in a phase pure rhombohedral structural model. Hereafter all samples will be referred to with the shorthand notation. The thermal analysis techniques are used to indicate the thermal dependence of the samples, this analysis also indicated phase stability across the temperature range of investigation as no phase transitions occurred throughout the heating and cooling cycles, and minimal weight loss is observed. The samples of importance in this study were the 12.5Nd10YSB sample which obtained a conductivity of 2.4511×10-5 S.cm-1 at 500 ℃, and the 15Nd5Y2.5TbSB sample which obtained a conductivity of 2.1725×10-5 S.cm-1 at 500 ℃. The Arrhenius plots obtained indicated stability 3 of these samples across the 200-500 ℃ temperature range with no discontinuities, which suggests no phase transitions, or order-to-disorder transitions. Variable temperature Raman spectroscopy indicated that the behaviour for all the samples analysed using Raman spectroscopy is consistent, however, a deviation was observed for the 15Nd5Y2.5ScSB sample which has a distinctive spot which exhibits different Raman shift behaviour as compared to all other samples. The VT-Raman spectroscopy spectra indicate a distinctive signature Raman peak at ~250 cm-1, which can be concluded to be the Raman peak which is indicative of the rhombohedral 𝐵𝑖2𝑂3, this peak also appears in the low cubic phase % sample after cooling back to room temperature. This assignment of the Raman spectral peak is confirmed through this peak being evident throughout all the spectra obtained and it being consistent throughout all the spectra observed.Item Isolation and characterisation of entomopathogenic fungi(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Kwinda, Fhatani; Lephoto, Tiisetso E.The purpose of the study was to isolate and identify fungal isolates in soil samples, followed by virulence characterisation to study their effectiveness in controlling insect pests using Tenebrio molitor as our model organism. Lastly, a combination study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the joint use of two entomopathogenic microorganisms. For isolation, T. molitor was used as bait then the isolated fungal isolates were identified using molecular and morphological characterisation. Morphological characterisation included macroscopic (fungal cultures) and microscopic (conidia shape and size) analysis while molecular characterisations included extraction of DNA, amplification of the internal transcribed spacer region and sequence alignment. Once identification was done, virulence was assessed through in-vitro virulence parameter like vegetative growth and in-vivo assessment where bioassays were done against T. molitor. Lastly, entomopathogenic fungi were combined with Cruznema sp. NTM-2021 in a soil assay. From the study, two of the five isolates were identified as entomopathogenic fungi, Metarhizium anisopliae ARSEF 7487. M. anisopliae had the slowest vegetative growth but was the highest in virulence. When used for a single application in a soil environment it reaches 97.8% mortality and its combination with Cruznema sp. NTM-2021 resulted in a 57.8% mortality and an additive interaction. In conclusion, M. anisopliae used alone was effective in its control of T. molitorItem Monitoring and evaluating urban land use land cover change using machine learning classification techniques: a case study of Polokwane municipality(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023) Funani, Tshivhase; Mhangara, PaidaRemote sensing is one of the tools which is very important to produce Land use and land cover maps through the process of image classification. Image classification requires quality multispectral imagery and secondary data, a precise classification technique, and user experience skill. Remote sensing and GIS were used to identify and map land-use/land-cover in the study region. Big Data issues arise when classifying a huge number of satellite images and features, which is a very intensive process. This study primarily uses GEE to evaluate the two classifiers, Support Vector Machine, and gradient boosting, using multi-temporal Landsat-8 images, and to assess their performance while accounting for the impact of data dimension, sample size, and quality. Land use/Landcover (LULC) classification, accuracy assessment, and landscape metrics comprise this study. Gradient Tree Boost and SVM algorithms were used in 2008, 2013, 2017, and 2022. Google Earth Engine was used for supervised classification. The results of change detection showed that urbanization has occurred and most of the encroachments were on agricultural land. In this study, XG boost, and support vector machine (SVM)) were used and compared for image classification to oversight spatio-temporal land use changes in Polokwane Municipality. The Google Earth Engine has been utilized to pre-process the Landsat imagery, and then upload it for classification. Each classification method was evaluated using field observations and high-resolution Google Earth imagery. LULC changes were assessed, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques, as well as the dynamics of change in LULCC were analysed using landscape matrix analysis over the last 15 years in four different periods: 2008–2013, 2018 and 2022. The results showed that XGBoost performed better than SVM both in overall accuracies and Kappa statistics as well as F-scores and the ratio of Z-score. The overall accuracy of gradient boosting in 2008 was 0.82, while SVM showed results of 0.82 overall accuracy and kappa statistics of 0.69. The average F-score for SVM in 2008 was from 0.58- 1.00, in 2013 an average of 0.86-0.97, and in 2022 it was 0.76. Z values were not statistically significant as all values were below the z score of 1.96. The ratios for the two classifiers were also taken to know which classifier performs the best. The results showed 212:212 which indicates that during 2008 SVM and XG boost performed the same way as they classified the same number of cases. During 2013 the ratio was 345:312 which shows that XGBoost performed better than SVM. The results of 2017 show 374:316 which shows that XGBoost performed better than SVM. Lastly, in 2022 the ratio was 298:277 which shows that XGBoost performed better than SVM. Overall zscores result show that XGBoost performs better than SVM. However, exploraBon of these strategies within the South African context is incomplete. This research aims to address this gap by applying various methods, including a systemaBc literature review, policy analysis, spaBal analysis using GIS, and conducBng interviews and surveys, resulBng in four key contribuBons invesBgaBng the potenBal for conservaBon corridors and networks. The first is a comprehensive literature review underscoring the significance of corridors and networks while highlighBng the discourse surrounding these emerging approaches in South Africa. The findings revealed a substanBal global interest in landscape iniBaBves. However, South Africa’s contribuBon is geographically limited, with 82% of studies focusing on the KwaZulu-Natal province. Understanding the efficacy of these studies in South Africa necessitates a comprehensive examinaBon of the underlying regulatory frameworks governing protected areas and conservaBon efforts. Therefore, the second contribuBon evaluated protected areas and conservaBon legislaBon and policies to assess their alignment with landscape-focused iniBaBves. The study reveals a lack of explicit provisions supporBng landscape-based conservaBon methods. The third study draws on these findings and uses the Vhembe District in the Limpopo Province as a case study to illustrate the overlooked potenBal of landscape iniBaBves. IniBally, the protected areas in the district were evaluated. Subsequently, the analysis employed Key and CriBcal Biodiversity Areas to highlight the inadequacies within the exisBng protected area network. The findings revealed that although protected areas cover 38% of the Vhembe District, over 70% of CriBcal Biodiversity Areas and 60% of Key Biodiversity Areas lack protecBon. Over 2,000 km2 of unprotected CriBcal and Key Biodiversity Areas were idenBfied along the Soutpansberg Mountain Range and marked as ideal for a conservaBon corridor. The fourth contribuBon centres on community engagement, an essenBal consideraBon for sustainable long-term conservaBon. The results underscored strong community support for a corridor in the Vhembe District, primarily moBvated by the anBcipated socio-economic benefits. However, while landscape iniBaBves promise socio-economic improvement, such outcomes are not guaranteed. Moreover, other potenBal challenges, including development, land rights, and financial constraints, were idenBfied as possible impediments to corridors in the Vhembe District. The invesBgaBon into corridors and networks in South Africa, specifically the Vhembe District, revealed that the discourse on landscape iniBaBves is in its nascent phase. Nevertheless, when prioriBsing community engagement, these iniBaBves harbour tremendous potenBal. New legislaBon and policies that account for these factors will guide proponents of these iniBaBves and propel landscape iniBaBves into South Africa’s conservaBon toolbox.Item Near-surface geophysical investigation of the Far Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023-10) Nadan, Thiashen; Scheiber-Enslin, Stephanie; Manzi, MusaPlatinum Group Elements (PGE’s) and chromium are the main economic minerals that are found within the Bushveld Complex. In particular, the Far Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex has not been completely explored, as it is overlain by a thick Quaternary sedimentary deposit which masks the contacts between the different underlying lithological units. Chromium outcrops within the Far Western Limb have already been identified and mined. The study aims to assess the feasibility of extended geophysical surveys which will further identify the shallow subsurface lithologies and evaluate the future mining potential in the area. Results of this study show that the quaternary cover is approximately eighty meters thick, implying a shallow bedrock within the Far Western Limb. This was used to delineate a contact between the Transvaal Supergroup and the Rustenburg Layered Suite that was lost beneath the sedimentary cover. This shows that shallow geophysical investigations and drilling can prove useful in delineating the lithologies hosting the chromium ores.
