Abstract

This research focuses on investigating the Architecture of healthcare focusing on facilities intellectual disabilities in a Sub -Saharan African context. The research on creating positive, calming and homely environments that connect with its surrounding environment. This should amplify and complements nature. Furthermore, there is a focus on values that have consequences for elderly patients with disabilities in a residential setting and in a healthcare setting. There needs to be an Architectural environment that can adapt with the changing needs of patients with intellectual disabilities and care space. There needs to be an architectural environment that can adapt to the changing physical and mental states of the residents over time. A healthcare centre has been developed to be suitable for residents for patients with high cognitive abilities. This healthcare addresses the ever -changing dynamics of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. There is a technical focus on materiality, daylight, landscape and indoor climate. Case studies of previous successful projects will be investigated. The knowledge learned from these case studies will be beneficial and will inform all aspects of the research. The process will use design by digital means for future scholars investigating similar projects.
