Abstract
In this study the possible barriers / obstacles to or use of ICTs that first year B Ed students on the
Wits School of Education campus are explored. Through the means of a questionnaire requiring
both quantitative and qualitative responses the students’ comments are analysed for possible
trends. The issue of age being a possible barrier is evaluated in light of the literature and data
provided. As two groups of students, a young pre-service group and an older in-service group,
emerge, the differences and similarities in their Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) experience on campus is detailed. Conclusions are drawn as to what barriers each of these
groups of students face and solutions are proposed as to how these students can be assisted to
overcome these hurdles in order to promote a more effective ICT experience.
