Abstract
I-beams are a commonly used section in engineering, due to the high section modulus for a given cross sectional area of a beam. Their resistance to static loads is often increased through the use of cover plates welded to areas where the applied bending moment is high. Welding, however, has a severe detrimental effect on the fatigue life of both steel and aluminium I-beams. (Abbreviation abstract)
