dc.description.abstract | The word ‘harmony’ is commonly used in music, and is defined as “the combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce a pleasing effect” according to the Oxford dictionary (1998). In architecture, harmony is used to describe complexities and differences that co-exist in relation to one another. In this research reported, the word harmony is going to be used as a middle position between music and architecture, allowing music to inform the design process for an architectural outcome. The design process is conducted in a series of exercises that will translate music into architecture, while the theoretical writing navigates through a timeline of expression emphasizing on the importance of evolving. This journey of finding harmony highlights the main idea of this research report: temporal experience and spatial permanent. The new Urban Development Plan of the Buffalo City Metro Municipality which aims to connect marginalised areas to the main economical hub and the lack of multi-functional music spaces in East London is the leading motivation to the research report. The report proposes an extension to the corridor that starts at the selected site, creating a celebrated entrance/end by adding a permanent experience of sound. | |
