Three hundred and thirteen isolates of neisseris gonorrhoeae were characterised into 26 different auxotypes. The prototrophs accounted for 53% of isolates, followed by the proline requiring (PRO) strains which accounted for 19% of isolates.. Ninety percent of the strains fell within the eight most common auxotypes. No strain requiring arginine, hypoxanthine and uracil ( ARG; HYX; URA) was characterised.en_ZA
