Abstract
This research examines the practice of filmmaking from the site of a wheelchair and reflects on the methodology of making films with a recurring set of limitations. The limitations have to do with various aspects of filmmaking from the spatial to the temporal. In this research I undertake an investigation of my own practice spanning a period of 19 years, while situating it in a lineage of film practitioners who have used the genre of experimental film as a vehicle for their own creative expression. Investigating film practices, including the production of virtual reality and experimental film, is central to the articulation of method and is connected to poetic strategies of writing to reflect the cinematic aesthetics and politics of my practice as a wheelchair user. The creative practice for the research includes a series of visual experiments in the aesthetics of cinematography and storytelling from the perspective of a wheelchair user, while the written thesis undertakes to document the process of creative practice and the theoretical inquiry that shapes the development of the work.
