dc.description.abstract	This thesis is an exploration of suburbia, its past, present and future. It presents an overview of the evolution of this distinct form of human settlement, as well as the opinions and proposals of various international stakeholders and role players with regards to suburban development. A major focus is placed on the public and communal features within this context, which if carefully considered and improved, have the ability to act as a catalyst for the enhancement of community life and the inclusion of a wider range of people within this daily activity. An understanding of the subtle and delicate fabric of suburbia and the attitudes and values of its inhabitants is crucial to interpreting the future possibilities of these areas as a positive contributor to humanity. The suburb of Craighall Park in Johannesburg was chosen as the specific area of consideration and investigation for this thesis. As an older established suburb with large extents of public space, it possesses attributes with the possibility of being integrated to form a successful multi-use hub of activity	en_US
