Abstract

Introduction Rural healthcare is a global concern, and one of the suggested ways of addressing the challenges faced is through the appropriate training of healthcare workers. The aim of the study is to develop consensus on the postgraduate education needs of occupational therapists in rural areas in South Africa. Methods Participants (n=16) rated and commented on statements in two consensus generating surveys. Survey 1 was developed from a rigorous review of the literature. Survey 2 was developed from Survey 1 non-consensus statements, and from participants’ comments. Results All but one statement from Survey 1, and three statements from Survey 2 achieved consensus. Results show that competencies required by occupational therapists in rural areas in South Africa are mostly universal, reflecting the needs and competencies reported in local and international literature, except for telehealth. Conclusion Results show a definite need for an appropriate postgraduate programme for ruralbased occupational therapists in South Africa.
