Abstract

The biggest threat to our planet more than global warming is the exponential growth of poverty and unemployment, both of which are present in Johannesburg. Farming methods that use less water and are not susceptible to too many diseases are the potential answer to the limitation of arable land in Johannesburg. The research question of the paper is about whether urban agriculture can increase food security in ways that aid in job creation and stimulate entrepreneurship among urban dwellers. The paper proposes the implementation of an innovative financing approach called Social Impact Bonds. The knowledge contribution of this research is the potential to stimulate government policies that allow for a more effective way to support urban agriculture in Johannesburg. The researcher hopes that this research will add to the body of knowledge and stimulate further research in urban agriculture.
