This paper is premised on an empirical study of administrative policies towards black women on the Rand in the 1920s and Thirties, presented as ‘Popular Representations of Black Women on the Rand and their Impact on the Development of Influx Controls, 1924-1937’ at the 1990 History Workshop Conference.
