dc.description.abstractLloyd’s of London is well-known throughout the world as a major insurance market. Lloyd’s history in South Africa, however, until now has not been documented. This dissertation seeks to provide a detailed account of a history of Lloyd’s in South Africa, highlighting its contribution towards the development of the South African insurance market. The study starts with a history of Lloyd’s in the United Kingdom. This is followed by the history of Lloyd’s in South Africa starting with the first discovered record of Lloyd’s in South Africa and concludes by setting out its current position in the South African insurance market.en_ZA
