Abstract

The Portuguese language is increasingly popular, being the target of great demand in South Africa, a country that has the geographical proximity of some Portuguese-speaking countries. Furthermore, since South Africa is a country where Portuguese has the status of an non-official language, it is imperative to carry out studies on the acquisition of Portuguese by English schooledspeakers, since, as mentioned in several studies, mother tongue transfer (LM) is one of the strategies often used by students to learn a non-mother tongue. Thus, the present study aims to identify the most common errors of syntax and morphology made by students who study Portuguese as a foreign language and who have English as their “home language”, at different levels of proficiency. More specifically, the most common types of syntax and morphology errors and the relationship between the two languages at the time of transfer will be investigated, the most common errors at each level of proficiency and the errors made by students who have studied or have studied more than one European language, in addition to identifying the reasons for these transfers. The need for this study is based on the lack of studies on Portuguese as a foreign language in South Africa, as well as the fact that few researchers have investigated students schooled in English who learn Portuguese. The reality is the converse as the learning of English by students who have Portuguese as a mother tongue has had much more research done. Thus, the present investigation will allow us to understand some of the most common syntactic and morphological errors of the Portuguese language made by English schooled students”, based on a study carried out with 21 participants from level A2, B1 and B2, at the University of Witwatersrand, in 2020 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
