This study was conducted to investigate the genetic diversity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in South African individuals. Blood was collected from 58 HIV-1 seropositive adult individuals during the period between 1996 and 1999 attending clinics across Johannesburg, South Africa. These samples were subtypedby heteroduplex mobility assay in the env and gag regions, and the sutype designations confirmed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis.en_ZA
