Health-related quality of life of men treated with hormonal therapy for prostate cancer

Abstract

HRQoL is the central focus of treatment and care for cancer patients regardless of treatment and whether the goal of treatment is cure, control or palliation. Research question: What is the HRQoL of men treated with hormonal therapy for prostate cancer at an academic hospital in Gauteng? Aim of the study: The study aimed to describe the HRQoL of men treated with hormonal therapy for prostate cancer at an academic hospital in Gauteng. Research Design: A cross-sectional design was used. A sample of 113 respondents were recruited using a convenience sampling. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and prostate-specific (EORTC QLQ - PR25) instruments were used for data collection. Data were analysed using STATA computer programme. Results: The HRQoL was affected by the disease and treatment side effects. All the domains except role functioning were compromised. Recommendations: Nurses are encouraged to conduct accurate assessment to manage patients holistically.
