Abstract
Discovering NyaDenga is a coming of age story of two protagonists, told from the
perspective of a young modern South African woman, Chuma.
It is one which takes place over a period of decades and Chuma discovers it when at a
point in her life as she tries to rediscover the meaning to her own life as a young woman.
When Chuma discovers the story of NyaDenga, Chuma begins to understand herself as
an artist, as well as circumstances around her life.
The narrative explores different themes, including, feminism, gay and lesbian relations,
education, the world of work, identity and the modern world versus the old. At the heart
of the novel lies the idea of the beginning of the notion of feminism in a remote rural
village of Phungoni in Venda, South Africa.
