dc.description.abstractThis research aims to assess the value of the Science Senior Certificate examination for both industry and Curriculum 2005. It does this by looking at the ways in which the Senior Certificate examination fits the needs of industry and the critical and specific outcomes of Curriculum 2005. A questionnaire was used to obtain feedback from a sample o f engineering companies on their views of the current Senior Certificate examination as a tool for employment practices. They were also asked about the scientific knowledge, skills and values which they require of school leavers as prospective employees. The Senior Certificate examinations of the GDE (Gauteng Department of Education) and the IBB (Independent Examinations Board) were analysed. Criteria used for the analysis were derived from Blooms Taxonomy, and the critical and specific outcomes o f Curriculum 2005. The results from the questionnaires and the examination analyses were compared. It was found that firstly: there was a poor match between the current examinations and the needs of the Engineering Industry and secondly; most of the learning outcomes specified by Cum alum 2005 are not assessed. The conclusion was reached that the format of the current examination must change if Curriculum 2005 is to succeed and if the needs of industry are to be met. Recommendations are made in this regard.en_ZA
