dc.description.abstract | Objectives: To determine the prevalence of CD in a T1DM paediatric population presenting to a single tertiary academic hospital in Johannesburg. Methods: A retrospective audit of the records of T1DM children who were seen and screened for CD from January 2014 until March 2017. Findings: A total of 76 T1DM patients were included in this study. Eleven had positive serology results for CD. Of the positive serology group nine patients had duodenal biopsies. Six patients (8%) had Marsh grading scores of two or three confirming CD. The majority of biopsy proven CD patients were asymptomatic with normal anthropometry. There were significant differences in prevalence among different ethnic groups Conclusions: The authors have found evidence to support international guidelines to screen all T1DM paediatric patients for CD in South Africa. Prevalence rates of CD in this T1DM group was consistent with other international studies. There is a need for larger group studies and exploring the role of different ethnicities in South Africa | en_ZA |
