Serum resistance and outer membrane proteins of haemophilus ducreyi
    (1990-12) Elias, Eric.
The pathogenicity of haemophilus ducreyi, the etiological agent of chancroid is poorly understood. Although h.ductreyi appears not to invade the bloodstream, resistance to lysis by normal human serum may allow prolonged multiplication of the organism within tissues. The determinants of serum resistance, however, remain to be elucidated and could include a number of bacterial surface components including outer membrane proteins (OMPs) and lipopolysaccharide

Serum resistance and lipopolysaccharide of haemophilus ducreyi
    (1990-02) Jardine, Jocelyn. Leonie
The pathogenesis of Haemophilus ducreyi, the aetiological agent of chancroid' is poorly understood. An ability to resist killing by pooled normal human serum (PNHS) appears to contribute to the virulence of several Gram-negative bacteria, influenced by their lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in certain cases. The aim of this investigation is to measure the degree of serum resistance in clinical strains of H. ducreyi, and to determine whether their LPS plays a role in this serum resistance.

A study of some cultural characteristics and blood serum antibody titres of enterococci isolated from the mouth and faeces
    (1975-06) Slabbert, J.C.G.
Crevicular epithelium presents no effective barrier to the biologically active constituents of plaque. Moreover, it seems that the production of circulating antibodies, the development of a state of delayed hypersensitivity and the development of immunological tolerance all play a part in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. An investigation was undertaken to study the cultural characteristics of enterococci isolated from the mouth and gut of a group of students, and to determinethe serum antibody titres to these organisms. Enterococci were isolated from faeces and the gingival crevice of 9 male dental students. Blood was obtained from each subject and allowed to clot. The serum was removed and stored at -20°C until required. Blood serum antibody titres to the bacteria were obtained by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique.

Studies on serum somatedin activity and cartilage responsiveness in the regulation of growth
    (1976) Beaton, G. R.
This thesis describes the results of experimental investigation of aspects of the endocrine regulation of growth in the rabbit, rat and man. In particular the role of serum somatomedin and cartilage responsiveness to somatomedin have been examined. Throughout a relationship between the physiological control mechanisms, namely the stimulus and the degree of end- organ responsiveness, and the velocity of growth has been sought.
