Systemic lupus erythematosus: the Johannesburg experience
    (1986) Morrison, Richard C. A.
This study is a predominantly retrospective analysis of patients in Johannesburg who presented with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus at 12 years of age or older. Johannesburg is situated at high altitude and has a high level of ultraviolet light irradiation/ a known exacerbating factor of the disease. This study draws comparisons with reported disease characteristics of lupus patients elsewhere in the world. In addition/ it examines differences in the clinical manifestations of the disease amongst the principle South African racial groups.

Characterization of genes conferring v factor independence in haemophilus parainfluenzae and haemophilus ducreyi
    (1994-12-18) Windsor, Helen. Marie
Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae are obligate human parasites that form part of the flora of the mucous membranes. They are normally present in the mouth and upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals. H. influenzae is known as a major pathogen in children while H. parainfluenzae is an opportunistic pathogen which is also found in the urogenital tract. H. ducreyi, however, has only been isolated from genital ulcers in patients suffering from chancroid. The various species of the genus Haemophilus are characterised by their requirements for two growth factors, X factor or haemin and V factor or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD).

Variation in calcium intake in rural black children
    (1983) Eyberg, Caroline, Jane
Two investigations are explored in this dissertation: dietary calcium intake in relation to calcium status in a group of rural Black children and the use of the dietary history and 24-hour dietary recall as a research tool. Children with rachitic bone deformities, members of a community in the Eastern Transvaal, have prompted extensive study. This has shown that the population as a whole has lowered serum calcium levels which appear to be the direct result of calcium deficient diets

Thermal Effects on the Performance of Schoolchildren
    (1991) Schiefer, RE
The effects of different thermal conditions on the performance and physiology of schoolchildren were determined. Children performed simulated school tasks in controlled indoor environments. The quality and speed of their performance on the task was recorded,as were weight, height, oral temperature, finger skin temperature and unprepared reaction time. The influence of personal parameters such as socioeconomic status was also investigated

Fragile X Syndrome: A Family Study
    (1997-10-31) Wessels, Tina-Marie
Fragile X syndrome is, second to Down syndrome, the commonest form of genetic mental retardation. The aim of this research project was to investigate the impact of having a child with this syndrome on the family relationships. The subjects were 21 mothers and 9 fathers of affected children. The data were collected by means of specially constructed questionnaires in interviews with 19 mothers and 8 fathers and completed by post in three cases. A control group of parents with a normal child, matched for sex and age of the affected child, family size and ethnic groups, was interviewed. The data were computerised and analyzed. The results showed that more experimental parents than controls enjoyed their child’s nature, but disliked the behavioural problems. About half of the experimental parents tended not to reward good behaviour physically. However, although most of the affected children were accepted by their siblings, they had fewer friends and more problems with their peers. Some parents thought that their relationship with their spouse had improved and others thought that it had deteriorated after the affected child’s birth. Most parents in both study groups would request prenatal diagnosis in subsequent pregnancies and significantly more experimental parents than controls would request a termination of pregnancy for an affected fetus. Most parents were satisfied with the health service they received. These results show that family dynamics are disturbed by the presence of a child with FMR. Counsellors and therapists working with these families should be aware of the effects of the syndrome on the family
