    Failure at the dental restorative etched enamel interface

    None of the restorative materials available to the dental profession adhere to tooth structure. The bonding of these materials could be greatly increased by etching the enamel surface prior to the placement of the restorative material. Conditioning of the enamel surface with phosphoric acid or an attenuated phosphoric acid solution is now an accepted procedure and widely applied in restorative and preventive dentistry.

    Relationship between fluoride concentration in enamel, DMFT Index, and degree of fluorosis in a community residing in an area with a high level of fluoride

    The DMFT index, degree of fluorosis (DEGF), fluoride concentration in enamel (F), and depth of etch (D) were determined in participants living in an area with a high fluoride level. A statistically significant difference was found between men and women for F and D. A significant correlation was established between F and DEGF and between F and age for men, but not for women.

    Mitotic activity in the oral epithelium of the albino rat

    In groups of Wistar rats 3 and 12 months of age, colchicine and radioautography were used to assess mitotic activity in oral epitheliums. Apparent mitotic activity in the epitheliums of the cheek, hard palate, and central, intermediate, and lateral zones of the soft palate depended on the method used and the age of the rat.

    Radioautographic study of mesenchymal cell activity in the secondary palate of the rat

    Fifteen µCi of ³H-thymidine was injected into the amniotic cavity of fetal rats from day 15 to 19 postinsemination. Analysis of radioautographs from these rats did not show increased mesenchymal cell activity to be responsible for medial rotation of the palatal shelves. Variations in cell activity in the older fetuses were mainly due to developing bone and glands.

    A qualitative and quantitative histochemical investigation of the effects of pilocarpine stimulation on amylase levels in rat submaxillary and parotid glands

    A histochemical study, using the starch substrate film technique, was done to compare amylase activity in fresh-frozen cryostat sections of paired male rat parotid and submaxillary-sublingual glands, before and after pilocarpine stimulation. A quantitative procedure was followed on the same material. Amylase depletion was apparent in sections of parotid gland incubated on starch films for short periods. Quantitative estimations on adjacent sections showed an amylase depletion of about 50%. In the submaxillary-sublingual gland, amylase was demonstrable in the blood vessels in both unstimulated and stimulated material and there appeared to be a higher concentration of the enzyme in the latter. Quantitative assays on adjacent sections demonstrated a very considerably raised level of amylase activity in the stimulated submaxillary gland. It was concluded that the histochemically demonstrable amylase in the blood vessels of the submaxillary and sublingual glands was blood amylase and that the raised level following pilocarpine stimulation might be interpreted as a passage to the blood of enzymes produced by other glands under the same stimulus.

    The effect of frozen irradiated bone homografts on the healing of defects in the mandible and femur of the rat

    1. The effects of frozen irradiated homogenous bone grafts on the healing of circumscribed defects in the mandibles and femora of forty albino rats have been studied. 2. The grafts were well tolerated by the host animals and did not appear in any way either to stimulate or to inhibit osteogenesis. The rate of healing of the defects containing the homografts compared favourably with that of the control defects.
