    The feminist classroom: women's action in the reinvention of adult learning spaces

    My focus is on working women in post democracy education and training programmes. Due to societal gender roles, rights for women, in both education and opportunity, should materialise in adult education systems. In order for women to be exposed to work opportunities as well as to maintain the domestic and child-rearing roles they play in society, these systems and spaces must be reinvented. I hope to defi ne indigenous feminist theories, and then to manifest these in the creation of learning spaces. Th rough deconstructing the hugely diverse lived experiences of women in their social roles, I will question educational subject matter, women’s representation as learners, workplace roles, domestic and child-rearing roles, and fi nally challenge the idea of the widely accepted school and classroom model as a centralised institution. Alternative practices of learning and knowing possibly have great impact on transformation for women. Th e ties between education and work lead me to choose factories as my site of interest. Th e site of Jeppestown is appropriate because it is where the light industrial practices about which I am talking, continue to exist. With this thesis I aim to propose an alternative model for working- women as students and educators. I aim to reinvent the systems and spaces in which women learn and in which contextualised feminist theories are manifested.

    Methods of teaching history to grade 12 adult learners: a case-study of an adult education centre in Winterveldt

    This study focuses on the methods of teaching history to grade 12 adult learners at a major rural adult education centre (run by the Sisters of Mercy of the Roman Catholic Church), called D.W .T. Nthate Adult Education Centre, in the Winterveld. The grade 12 history class consists of adult learners of different ages, abilities, maturities and levels of knowledge. This research explored the possibility of making history teaching in a complex situation more interesting and more participatory. The case-study method of investigation was used to explore history teaching methods using the perspective of both the learners and the tutors. Learners wrote and spoke about the teaching methods they liked and with which they could identify and expressed their dissatisfaction with some of the other teaching methods used; tutors described their favourite teaching methods and how they employed them in the classroom situation. Some teaching methods were observed. This information and the insights obtained from these techniques of gathering data were related to the literature studied in the literature survey. This information presented a great challenge in making teaching of history more interesting and more participatory. Literature was reviewed in terms of the themes that relate to the topic of this research, namely: the historical context of adult education In South Africa; the place and importance of history in educatiu-:; princlplss of teaching adults; approaches and methods of teaching history; particip. to y methods of teaching adult learners, and an overview of curriculum change in South Africa (Curriculum 2005). The literature provided insight into the methods or teaching history in this specific situation. The literature was reviewed in order to uavelop minimum guidelines consisting of important elements In teaching hi?to: .' b grade 12 adult learners in the specific context of the study.     The relationship between adult basic education and training (ABET) and work opportunities

    A national education policy proposal to integrate adult basic education and training (ABET) in South Africa came about largely because of pressure from trade unions to introduce training at the workplace which would make workers more marketable in case of retrenchment. Workplace ABET programmes provide literacy and numeracy skills, after which some workers have a chance of joining further training opportunities provided by their employers. The Independent examinations Board (JEB) provides adult examinations and certifies those learners who pass. This study aims to find out whether the ABET certificates issued by the IBB, particularly Level 3 certificates, open up job opportunities for their holders. A qualitative approach was adopted to research the views of ABET learners and their managers. A small scale survey was undertaken in which four industries providing ABET in the Gauteng area were visited. Interviews were conducted to access information on learners’ and managers’ views on ABET certification. This proved a suitable method for the study because the researcher managed to build confidence in learners and at times used the learners’ home language to clarify questions. The study concludes that ABET empowered learners by giving them reading, writing and communication skills. These skills helped them in building their confidence when communicating with their supervisors and to work with less supervision. On the other hand the study showed that there was no direct relationship between the certificates that learners earned and work opportunities. Managers could not clearly identify the kind of work that learner who had attained ABET Level 3 certificates could perform. The recommendations call for a clear' policy by both unions and employers on ABET. Workers need to be rewarded for the effort they put into learning, even if the rewards are not the reasons which lead them to learn.

    University adult education approches: developing a model for the Qwa-qwa campus of the University of the North

    This study develops a model for university adult education to guide the Qwa-Qwa Campus of the University of the North in its quest to play a role in adult education practice. It explores the route that the Qwa-Qwa Campus could take in extending its resources to a wide range of individuals, special interest groups and targeted audiences in the North-Eastern Free State community that was historically marginalised from university education. In developing the envisaged model the study explores a number of international and local (South African) approaches in university adult education. This academic endeavour is intended to provide some guidelines for the Qwa-Qwa Campus’ envisaged role in university adult education. In pursuance of these aims (lie study investigates the typical role that a university plays in adult education by reflecting on the following issues: _ University outreach __ Distance education _ University Extension programmes / service _ University adult and ccntmuing education _ Universities and communities __ Sources o f funding for university adult education practice. A review of literature including a home-page survey are used as methodologies of unravelling typical University Adult Education approaches of four universities in Australia ii(La Trobe, Deakin, Ballarat and Charles'STtirt), one university in the United States of America (Tuskegee), two universities in Southe; s Africa (Botswana and Lesotho) and four Universities in South , . . Africa (Western Cape, Cape ToWd, Witwatersrand and Transkei). Key people at selected South African Universities actively involved in adult education practice were interviewed. Three people fi/nn the community were interviewed to assess the needs of surrounding people in the Qwa-Qwa area. The study brings these elements together in an attempt to develop a realistic model for the involvement of the Qwa-Qwa Campus in adult education.

    Achieving sustainability in an Adult Basic Education (ABE) Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO): a case study of Project Literacy

    This research report explores how Project Literacy, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), involved in adult basic education, was able to achieve sustainability by engaging in a comprehensive and ongoing restructuring process. It was mainly the new political dispensation as well as changes in funding policies for NGOs that necessitated the restructuring process. The principal aims o f the study were to document how this organisation managed its change process and what other measures it took to enhance the sustainability of its organisation. The research has been conducted in the qualitative research approach. The case study was selected as a major technique. A questionnaire and interviews with key staff were the main dava gathering methods. Triangulation was achieved by the use of various organisational documents such as independent evaluations among other?. Research findings suggested that without the restructuring process Project Literacy would not have been sustainable. The findings illustrated that the ability to change and adapt continuously was imperative. It also showed that any NGO needs a clear vision, a good product, sound management practices and motivated and efficient staff.

    Materials development training for ABET workers.

    The aim of this study was to develop a high-quality, experience-based, accredited training course that would bring black literacy workers into the ABET materials writing field. The report begins by setting the context of ABET in South Africa, then describing the literature on a wide variety of materials development projects in South Africa and other developing countries, some of which can be used as models for the proposed course. Training courses in fields outside ABET also inform the study. Through a combination of questionnaires and interviews, the study explores the needs of institutions concerned with ABET materials as well as the needs and skills of potential trainees. Ten specialists were interviewed: Seven were ABET practitioners representing a tertiary institution, NGOs and government and three were involved in educational publishing.They identified the need for relevant practical materials in all South African languages and learning areas, and said a training course should stress thinking skills, writing skills, visual literacy and a firm grasp of the process and economics of book production. Thirty eight potential trainees were contacted through questionnaires and focus groups. They were positive about the proposed course and alerted the researcher to logistical issues regarding finances and timing. All respondents said the course must be accredited in line with NQF requirements. The main tension that arose in the interviews was around priorities. While all the experts said training in the production of materials was important, it had to viewed as a luxury in light of extremely limited resources and urgent demands for delivery. Finally a proposed course is described, consisting of a 12-module, part-time course lasting approximately one year.
