Item A philosophy of quantity surveying(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 1975-05) Walker, clydeA quantity surveyor has been defined as "a surveyor who estimates the quantities of the materials and labour required for any work" but this has become expanded and modified through the work in fact done by quantity surveyors. Quantity surveying principles are also applied to the work of other disciplines. For example, cost engineering, which at first sight has nothing to do with quantity surveying, has been described by The American Association of Cost Engineers (AACE) as: "that area of engineering principles where judgment and experience are utilized in the application of scientific principles and techniques to problems of cost estimating, cost control and business planning and management science."
