NorrisPurpose – This study aims to ascertain the personal characteristics of a group of successful academic entrepreneurs in a South African university enterprise and the prevalent barriers and enablers to their entrepreneurial endeavour. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used a Delphi process to identify and rank the characteristics, enablers, barriers and behaviours of entrepreneurial academics, with a Nominal Group Technique applied to establish challenges they encounter managing their enterprise and to propose solutions. Findings – Perseverance, resilience and innovation are critical personal characteristics, while collaborative networks, efficient research infrastructure and established research competence are essential for success. The university’s support for entrepreneurship is a significant enabler, with unnecessary bureaucracy and poor access to project and general enterprise funding an impediment. Successful academic entrepreneurs have strong leadership, and effective management and communication skills. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation is the small study participant group drawn from a single university enterprise, which complicates generalisability. The study supported the use of Krueger’s (2009) entrepreneurial intentions model for low- and middle-income country (LMIC) academic entrepreneur investigation but proposed the inclusion of mitigators to entrepreneurial activation to recognize contextual deficiencies and challenges.Item Discovery and technical validation of highperformance methylated DNA markers for the detection of cervical lesions at risk of malignant progression in low and middleincome countries(BIOMED CENTRAL LTD) M Fackler; M Pleas; Youran Li; A Soni; Eunice Van Den Berg; Reubina Wadee; Pamela Michelow; Wenlong Chen; Maureen Joffe; E etalItem Disparities in breast cancer survival between women with and without HIV across subSaharan Africa ABC DO a prospective cohort studyS Chasimpha; V McCormack; Herbert Cubasch; Maureen Joffe; A Zietsman; M Galukande; E et alItem Impact of HIV infection on survival among women with stage llll breast cancer results from the south african breast cancer and HIV outcomes studyOluwatosin Ayeni; D O'Neil; YS Pumpalova; Wenlong Chen; Sarah Nietz; Boitumelo Phakathi; Witness Mapanga; Maureen Joffe; Tobias Chirwa; E et al; Paul Ruff; Herbert CubaschItem The impact of Breast Cancer Treatment Delays on Survival Among South African WomenY Pumpalova; Oluwatosin Ayeni; Wenlong Chen; Ines Buccimazza; S Cacala; L Stopforth; H Farrow; Witness Mapanga; Sarah Nietz; Boitumelo Phakathi; Maureen Joffe; Paul Ruff; Herbert Cubasch; E et alItem Treatment guideline concordance initiation and abandonment in patients with nonmetastatic breast cancer from the African Breast CancerDisparities in Outcomes ABCDO cohort in subSaharan Africa a prospective cohort studyM Foerster; V McCormack; B O Anderson; P Boucheron; Herbert Cubasch; Maureen Joffe; E et al
