| dc.description.abstract | Water purchase is impacting negatively on the communities in Less Developed Countries (LDC), in Africa and in low-income areas in South Africa. This has resulted in resistance to pay for improved water services by poor consumers in White City, in SOWETO. The purpose of the research was to investigate the challenges facing White City community regarding water purchase. The research methodology used in this study was qualitative and involved data collected from three focused groups at White City Community in SOWETO. The findings suggested that the privatisation of water services is unlikely to lead to sustainable improvement in service delivery in poor communities and may well worsen the situation for some. The study also found that there is high level of non-payment which is associated with perceptions that water should be provided for free and lack of information on water policy issues as well as lack of education. | en_US |
