Abstract
This project aims to comprehend the challenges that hinder the realization of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) objectives as per announcement by the President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, in 2003. The gap between the formal and informal sectors is growing and an interim intervention strategy, EPWP, was introduced with to the aim of reducing unemployment and poverty in the country and address the apparent shortage of skills, especially with the declining percentage of existing artisans. A qualitative approach has been adopted in this study whereby a sample to be interviewed will comprise of people that currently coordinate the programme in the Gauteng Province. Open-ended questions were used to encourage discussion that will assist in being able to give conclusive solutions. This study aims at establishing factors that contribute towards poor coordination of the programme in the Gauteng Province; lessons learned that could enhance coordination of the programme of this nature and magnitude in the near future; and document lessons learned with a sole purpose of improving coordination and implementation of the programme in Gauteng.
