Abstract
Internationally and locally, the increase in the supply of golf estates are fuelled by the demand for golf course living. Not only driven by the ability to play golf, the rapid increase in property values, the tranquil, green environment and the added security offered by these gated communities is creating a lifestyle asset desired by many. The debate surrounding these developments exists largely between the local communities, environmentalists and government on one hand and stating that these elitist consumptive developments are creating segregated communities and developers emphasising the socio-economic contribution of the estates. The objective of this research was to specifically focus on the socio-economic contribution the golf courses that form part of golf estates in Gauteng make during its operational phase. The findings of this research were that, when compared to previously conducted studies that focussed predominantly on the Western Cape, these courses do make a significant socio-economic contribution.
