Abstract

Two aspects of radar-based measurement of convective rainfall over the Transvaal Highveld are examined. Drop size distributions (DSDs) are studied in order to quantify the effects of drop size distribution variability on the Z-R relationship, and the area-time integral (ATI) method is investigated as a possible means of radar rainfall measurement. Drop sorting effects are clearly evident in convective rain with resultant DSDs having higher numbers of large drops and causing Z-R derived rain rates to be overestimated. Abbreviation abstract)
