Abstract
Previous research in the southern highveld of South Africa established the southern boundary of
agriculturist stone walled settlement in the lower Caledon Valley. This study assesses the
evidence for interaction between hunter-gatherers and agriculturists in the resulting middle
Caledon Valley fro.itier zone from a hunter-gatherer perspective, using archaeological data and
historical accounts. To obtain the archaeological data three rock shelters were excavated; Orange
Springs, Rooikrans and Westbury. Data from sites in the frontier zone excavated by other
researchers is also considered in this study. These sites include Rose Cottage Cave, Roosfontein,
Mauermanshoek and Tandjiesberg. (Abbreviation abstract)
