Abstract
ABSTRACT South Africa’s hospital or health care delivery environment has in recent times faced serious challenges and when pulled together with the overall delivery of public goods, has not been sparred service delivery protests. In this context, hospitals are more pressured to improve the quality of medical care they deliver with limited resources available to them. The general public assumes that the presence in hospitals of different professionals with specialised knowledge to solve health care problems, will lead to their service delivery expectations being met or surpassed. Hospitals, irrespective of their size, are generally viewed as knowledge-intensive and therefore critical to how they are managed is the construction, organization, dissemination and application of knowledge. This study was triggered by the need to understand knowledge management practices at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic (CMJA) Hospital with particular reference to how knowledge is acquired and shared, and to a lesser degree how knowledge is generally assimilated and applied. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine how knowledge should be managed by health professionals at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital and challenges experienced in the process of managing knowledge. The factors identified were used to examine sharing knowledge in order to realize the value of knowledge management to ensure efficient service delivery. In pursuit of this purpose, a qualitative research approach was adopted with interviews conducted with at least seven professionals. Key findings are presented in chapter four which also analyses interview information as well as the literature. The study concludes by also presenting recommendations considered feasible to implement, monitor and evaluate.
