Abstract
The expansion of South African retailers into the rest of Africa incurs
business risks that are different from normal business risks and the risks of
doing business in other emerging markets. The literature on retailers
focuses more on growth through globalisation and, to an extent, very
generally on emerging markets. Africa presents its unique risks and
characteristics for businesses that would like to expand into the rest of
Africa. The report attempts to analyse critically the reasons behind South
African retailers’ expansion into the rest of Africa. The report also analyses
risk-mitigation strategies undertaken by South African retailers who are
expanding into Africa. The report also examines what would make doing
business in Africa easier for retailers
