Abstract
South Africa is the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria is the most populous nation with the largest consumer market. Nigeria is also potentially South Africa’s most important trading partner on the continent. The two countries concluded bilateral trading agreements in 2000, with the stated intent of increasing trade and investment for mutual benefit. The level of trade between South Africa and Nigeria increased with the latter’s return to democracy in 1999 and the economic reforms that followed. This project report addresses bilateral trade relations between South Africa and Nigeria with the intent to understand whether the objectives of the trade agreements have been realised. The report seeks to identify, from the perspective of a carefully selected group of Nigerian business people, what factors could contribute to an improvement in the competitive position of South African companies seeking to do business with Nigeria and thus lead to an increase in trade.
