Paper presented 5 August, 1975It has been postulated that the greater the barriers between groups - or, more specifically, ethnic groups - the greater the tendency for stereotypes to be generalized. In such stereotyping, in other words, not only are individual differences between group members ignored, but also differences between sub-categories within the larger group. It would seem unnecessary to labour the point that in South Africa barriers between Black and White tend to be well-defined, widely-ramifying and, in many aspects, largely imfermeable.enRace relatons.
