Once the early pioneers realised that Johannesburg was there to stay and was rapidly becoming a world metropolis, they built in the grand manner, and in many cases their newly found wealth is reflected in the structures they built. The Chamber of Mines Building in Market Street, although not as picturesque as the cast-iron fantasies, is representative of the early Johannesburg architecture, that was an epoch in itself.
