This qualitative study makes use of an exploratory case study design to explore the lived reality of black African cisgender women on traditional male-dominated apprenticeships, and the gender equality barriers they experience during their apprenticeships. The study was situated at the Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy (TLMA), a municipal technical training facility in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (hereafter referred to as the CTMM). Data was obtained from a focus group (apprentices) and in-depth interviews(instructors), with the aid of a semi-structured topic guide for focus groups, and a structured interview guide for instructors. Twelve participants and four key informants were recruited using purposive sampling methods. Data was transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis.
