JOHANNESBURG. 1994In recent years organisations have become heavily dependant upon their capability of exchanging information rapidly using computer networks. Consequently, the number of networks and internets has proliferated dramatically, resulting in an increased volume of informa'ion being transported over computer networks. The Metroring networking protocol has been specifically designed to offer high reliability while coping with heavy Ioading, The Metroring architecture incorporates concurrent transmissions, a ring topology, full-duplex links and uses fibre optic technology. This dissertation presents a simulation model of the Metroring system constructed in the object-oriented paradigm. The model is used to evaluate the performance characteristics of the protocol. The efficiency of Metrcring does not degrade as physical size increases. High effective throughput compared witu current protocols makes Metroring suitable for a wide range of modern, bandwidth-intensive applicationsenPerformance analysis of the metroring networking protocolThesis
