I EPIGRAPHS I am an African. I owe my being to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the glades, the rivers, the deserts, the trees, the flowers, the seas and the ever-changing seasons that define the face of our native land. I am an African. I am born of the peoples of the continent of Africa. The pain of the violent conflict that the peoples? experience is a pain I also bear. The dismal shame of poverty, suffering and human degradation of my continent is a blight that we share. President THABO MBEKI Africa ? The time has come A human being is naturally and fundamentally endowed with an interior shove towards others. His happiness resides in his relationship with other human beings. Thus a human being is a reality which cannot be isolated from other human beings. He is fully human only in his relations with others. Then, living is to live with and existing is to co-exist. Jean-Marie KUZITUKA DID?HO ?Our enemy in academic studies is sufficiency; whoever truly wants to learn must start by getting rid of it.? II DEDICATEE In loving Memory of my late Father: GILBERT KUZITUKA FWETI Who taught me the life of togetherness in the love of Christ. I dedicate this Anthropological investigation. III ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS At the end of my postgraduate studies of Masters, I would like to thank God the Almighty who used me as his instrument to investigate and reflect academically on the notion of coexistence ? togetherness, tolerance and acceptance in our diversity and differences. Africa in its current socio-political situation seems to neglect the notion of community life. Selfish individualism is winning more and more space in people?s lives. The philosophy of Ubuntu (becoming truly a person in and through other people) is fading slowly but surely. This is seen in the daily relationship between black South Africans and African immigrants/migrants in Yeoville, Johannesburg. This is a major challenge for Africa if it wants to play an active role in the phenomenon of globalisation. I sincerely express my gratitude for all the help and advice that I kindly received from my Supervisor, Professor David Coplan. I would like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Loren B. Landau and to Professors Sheila Meintjes and Shahid Vawda for their remarks and advices. I also acknowledge with thanks the co-operation of my informants for their time and patience. I confirm that this research is original and my own work. JEAN-MARIE KUZITUKA DID?HO Tel. 082 58 90 178 E-mail: did_ho@yahoo.co.uk
