Abstract
The study explores the challenges facing the department of education in trying to retain
teachers in Mopani District. It examines whether the department of education is coming
up with the best approaches and/or strategies to regain teachers’ confidence and pride
with regard to their profession. The study identifies different approaches and/or strategies
that the department of education is putting in place to keep quality teachers in schools.
The study also reveals that there are a lot of problems in implementing these strategies.
During the in-depth interviews I conducted with the District Manager, Circuit Managers,
a Human Resource Manager and School Managers it emerged that there is a real need for
the retention teachers with much needed expertise as well as the recalling of some of
those who have already left the system. Accordingly, the study argues that if best and
strategic approaches could be used to address the issue of teacher attrition / turnover,
such a measure could go a long way in arresting the exodus of good teachers in the
system.
