    HARMONIC INVESTIGATION IN LOW AND MEDIUM VOLTAGE NETWORKS USING COMPUTER SIMULATION AND MEASUREMENT DEVICES

    This dissertation discusses the development of an ATP model of a network to aid measurement techniques in a harmonic evaluation. A theoretical back- ground discussion of various pieces of equipment and their signi cance to har- monics is included. National Electricity Regulator (NRS 048) standards are discussed with refer- ence to performing a basic investigation and short comings. A test study was performed on the Brandspruit Mine in Secunda. ATP models are developed for equipment relevant to the test case, these in- clude AC{AC converters, AC{DC converters, three phase transformers and cables. Finally the measured test case is compared to simulation results and conclusions drawn.

    Approaching real time dynamic signature verification from a systems and control perspective.

    algorithm. The origins of handwriting idiosyncrasies and habituation are explained using systems theory, and it is shown that the 2/3 power law governing biomechanics motion also applies to handwriting. This leads to the conclusion that it is possible to derive handwriting velocity profiles from a static image, and that a successful forgery of a signature is only possible in the event of the forger being able to generate a signature using natural ballistic motion. It is also shown that significant portion of the underlying dynamic system governing the generation of handwritten signatures can be inferred by deriving time segmented transfer function models of the x and y co-ordinate velocity profiles of a signature. The prototype algorithm consequently developed uses x and y components of pen-tip velocity profiles (vx[n] and vy[n]) to create signature representations based on autoregression-with-exogenous-input (ARX) models. Verification is accomplished using a similarity measure based on the results of a k-step ahead predictor and 5 complementary metrics. Using 350 signatures collected from 21 signers, the system’s false acceptance (FAR) and false rejection (FRR) rates were 2.19% and 27.05% respectively. This high FRR is a result of measurement inadequacies, and it is believed that the algorithm’s FRR is approximately 18%.

    Hydraulic and hydrological modelling of the Nyl River floodplain for environmental impact assessment

    There have been various threats from upstream catchment developments to the water supply of the ecologically important Nylsvlei floodplain in South Africa. Hydrological modelling of the catchments and unsteady hydraulic modelling of the floodplain (including measured losses to evapotranspiration and infiltration) with biotic links to Oryza longistaminata revealed that existing developments within the catchments have decreased areas suitable for growth of this plant in the Nylsvley Reserve by 9% on average from 1973/74 to 2000/01 compared to the catchment in a virgin state. Construction of the proposed Olifantspruit Dam with environmental flow releases would have reduced these suitable areas by a further 9% on average. Catchment developments were found to have the greatest impact on floodplain inundation in average to dry years and would also reduce the frequency of occurrence of suitable conditions for growth of Oryza longistaminata.
