Item Rationality of development – investigating [economic] development as a form of rationalisation of society(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Satsha, Anele; Lange, JeromeThis study argues that the existing understandings of development, which are mostly based on capitalist modes of production and instrumental rationality, narrowly focussed and unable to engage with deeper socio-economic contexts. This analysis critically examines the dominant focus on economic efficiency and growth as the key measures of development, drawing upon a range of rationalities such as substantive, emotional, and value rationalities. The paper explores the impact of changes in prevailing modes of rationality on the restructuring of social frameworks and economic systems. Advocating for a re-evaluation of development theory, this study proposes decentring capitalist production modes and integrating broader rationalities to conceptualize development. This approach calls for a paradigm shift towards a more inclusive, holistic, and human-centred understanding of development, challenging the existing frameworks to pave the way for sustainable and equitable progress.
