Abstract
In an era characterised by a dynamic environment, with tough financial conditions, it is vital for organizations to be highly competitive in order to survive under such tough conditions, be able to create shareholder value and play a major role in the economy and socio-economic development. Innovation management provides mechanisms for organizations to remain competitive, such that they can derive huge benefits from employing innovation strategically. This study sets out to investigate MTN’s innovation management strategy, looking at the approach or systems and processes that MTN employs in order to improve its innovation capabilities and also what are the conditions or factors that enable or hinder its innovation success. A case study approach was used to explain the methodologies and conditions at MTN. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data for the research questions and a thematic analysis approach was used for the analysis of the data. The research found that although MTN is successful and has had incredible growth, there are no proper methodologies or systems used, as suggested by the literature. The results also shows that MTN has the right condition for innovation, the leadership is experienced, well-educated and relatively young. Diversity is embraced, the culture is tolerant of ambiguity and risk taking. In order for MTN to fully benefit from Innovation, the study recommends that it establish well defined systems and methodologies, which will help the organization to realise the full potential of its internal resources and dynamic capabilities. Other organizations can still learn from MTN’s internal systems and processes as an initial start on the innovation journey.
