Abstract
Employee Performance and Workplace Wellness Programs is not a new concept globally, or in South Africa, and there have been a number of studies done around Employee Performance and Workplace Wellness Programs alike, but little has been done in the South African context to link the impact of Workplace Wellness Programs to Employee Performance. As a result, organisations that are looking for research to assist them in making the choice on whether or not to implement a Workplace Wellness Program are forced to use case studies and research pertaining to overseas organisations. This research report will attempt to uncover a few links between the aforementioned topics to assist local organisations in making their decision. The research analysis that was used was thematic content analysis which the researcher was able to do from data collected from 10 face-to-face interviews conducted under strict and rigorous interviews according to an interview schedule designed by the researcher. The respondents that were selected were employees of Discovery holdings who all hold senior management and executive level positions. All of the respondents have a range of 10 to 53 staff reporting to them and have on average been employed by Discovery for 10 years. The research findings indicated that workplace Wellness Programs did indeed impact positively on Employee Performance and that there were 4 main factors that employee engagement in the Workplace Wellness Program affected, which in turn resulted in an increase in overall Employee Performance. The key message that was highlighted in this research report is that Workplace Wellness Programs do have a large impact on Employee Performance, and it is therefore suggested that organisations who would like to reduce sick leave of employees, reduce errors in work, increase employee retention and employee morale should implement Workplace Wellness Programs.
