Abstract
This project seeks to establish if adult education principles are being employed in the B1TED programme. The Bureau for In-Service Teacher Development (BITED) is an in-service teacher training programme at the Johannesburg College of Education that provides professional development courses for teachers. 650 students are currently registered. The researcher identifies teaching and learning principles and strategies in adult education and then assesses the extent to which these are being applied in the BITED programme. She details the perceptions of the mature students who are currently in the BITED programme, as well as the perceptions of the BITED staff. Data was gathered from interviews conducted with students and staff and classroom observations were made. This project is based on the assumption that there is scope for a more varied methodological approach in the in-service training of teachers and that, consultation with mature learners might be used to advantage.
