<title>Mobile Technologies - Information on the Move... or Stuck in a Groove? - a South African Perspective</title>

<description>Mobile Technologies - Information on the Move... or Stuck in a Groove? - a South African Perspective
Nicholson, Denise Rosemary
Mobile technologies present exciting and new opportunities to those who have not been able to access digital information before or provide additional opportunities for access. Education programmes and curricula are being revitalized through innovative technologies. Digital technology has the potential to revolutionize the lives of people with sensory-disabilities. Developing countries are now able to tap into global knowledge through a variety of hand-held devices. There is a lot of information available on open access which can be downloaded to these technologies. However, not everything is free. Copyright issues have to be taken into account when using copyrighted material on these devices. Rights-holders and manufacturers control use and access to information on mobile devices through the use of digital rights management systems (DRMs), technological protection mechanisms (TPMs), and strict licences. This paper highlights some benefits of mobile technology for education and disseminating information in a developing country’s context. It also discusses how copyright, licensing and technological protection measures prevent or hamper access and help to keep information 'stuck in a groove'.

<title>Knowledge Management for the South African Architectural Profession, based on a Local Case Study</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10539/8854</link>
<description>Knowledge Management for the South African Architectural Profession, based on a Local Case Study
Johnson, Johanna
Traditionally, architectural archives serve as a repository of knowledge which supports architects in developing a frame of reference. They also have the function of preservation. In the developed world, these archives of architectural knowledge have been established for public use, whilst the developing world generally lacks these repositories. With South Africa being a developing country in a third world, its history of architecture is scarcely documented. Therefore, core knowledge-assets for the profession in this part of the world have been neglected. This paper explores the challenges facing Architecture libraries, professionally and academically, in maintaining service excellence considering the special user needs of architects and planners, in the context of digitisation.

<title>The African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) Project : a brief overview</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10539/8648</link>
<description>The African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) Project : a brief overview
Nicholson, Denise Rosemary
This paper provides a brief overview of the African Copyright &amp; Access to Knowledge Project (ACA2K)&#13;
which was established in 2007 and which is funded by the International Development Centre (IDRC) in&#13;
Canada and the Shuttleworth Foundation in South Africa. This project is probing the relationship&#13;
between national copyright environments and access to knowledge in eight African countries. The paper&#13;
describes the background and context of the project; why those countries were selected; the conceptual&#13;
framework within which the project is conducting its research, and the methodology applied. It discusses&#13;
some preliminary research findings and provides some recommendations of future activities of the&#13;
ACA2K project.
